This is a very interesting post as handmade natural soaps are new to many. We all are well aware of chemical laden store bought soaps that are purely detergents. We have been using then since we can remember.

But with time, people have become conscious about what goes into their body and on their body. What we eat and what we use for our skin largely matters as it has a long-term effect on our well being.

Store-bought-soaps Vs Handmade soaps

Store bought soaps are made of synthetic lathering agents and chemical detergents. These are very harsh on skin and tend to cause irritation. They lack glycerin which is an important ingredient for softer gentler skin.

Store bought soaps are filled with chemical colors and fragrances that do no good to us. These are low on the price scale tempting customers to stock up. The chemicals used in these soaps, when bought in bulk reduce the selling price of soaps.

Handmade natural soaps are made up of oils, butters and lye. They contain glycerin which is a great moisturizing agent for skin.

Handmade soaps are enriched with the goodness of nature. They can be made with essential oils, vegetable and fruit purees, edible colors and other medicinal herbs.

Handmade soaps can be customised according to our need. They are pieces of pure love and care. These soaps are customised to each person’s need. They involve time and care. Each ingredient used it to be of high quality. So they are a little high on the price range. But it is better to pay a slightly higher price in order to avoid paying a bigger price when your skin is damaged.

Types of Handmade soaps:

  • Melt & pour soaps

  • Cold process soaps

  • Hot process soaps

Melt & pour soaps

They are made from a readymade soap base which is available in the market. They have sulfate free versions too. They are very easy to make at home level. The soap base has to be cut into blocks and melted. To which, colours, fragrances, essential oils are added and poured into moulds. It is fun working with them. They are not as tedious as cold or hot process soaps.

Cold process soaps

These soaps are made from the scratch. It takes time and dedication in making these beauties. It employs the use of Sodium hydroxide (lye- which disappears from soap in the final stage due to saponification reaction). The oils are heated and mixed with the prepared lye solution. Personal choice of essential oils, colors are added before pouring into moulds.

Hot process soaps

Unlike cold process soaps, the lye is heated externally and mixed with oils. This is the least used natural soap-making method as it requires a lot of safety procedures. However the final product is the same as that of cold process soaps.
